The QS World University Rankings Asia 2020 are now live and the National University of Singapore has again taken the top spot across the Asian region.

Following closely behind is another Singaporean institution, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which rose from its third-place position last year.

This year sees the University of Hong Kong (HKU) take third place, dropping from its previous position in second place.

Chinese institutions also featured prominently in the rankings with Tsinghua University coming in fourth (dropping from third last year) and Peking University retaining its fifth-place position.

Sixth and seventh place were also taken by Chinese institutions with Zhejiang University and Fudan University ranking well. This was an impressive rise in the rankings for Zhejiang University, which ranked in 13th place last year.

Slight drops were seen by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), which came in eighth place this year and seventh last year, and KAIST – Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which came in ninth place this year and eighth last year.

Finally, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) rounds out the top ten, falling from its ninth position last year.

The rankings saw six new entrants from mainland China, with overall performance staying relatively stable for Chinese institutions.

In Japan, there were some drops in the rankings with a relative regression in research indicators, like citations per paper and papers per faculty.

South Korean institutions also struggled in this year’s rankings due to their performance in research collaboration and employer reputation indicators.

On the plus side, Malaysian institutions reported a strong performance in reputational indicators, international research networks, and internationalization metrics.

Top-tier institutions in Taiwan also saw good performances across the board with clear improvements in reputational indicators.
