In late 2024, Universidad Indoamérica set out to renew and design academic programs tied to its institutional strategy and the realities graduates face after graduation. To support that shift, the university partnered with 1Mentor to apply Curricular Analytics across 20 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The resulting reports translated labor-market demand, skill trends, and target occupational pathways into concrete inputs for graduate profiles, learning outcomes, and program proposals. Early use of the insights strengthened accreditation and quality assurance documentation and sparked broader conversations about transversal competencies—especially those shaped by AI, sustainability, and digital transformation.

What began as program-by-program analysis quickly became a catalyst for institution-wide reflection on relevance and employability.

Context and challenge

Across higher education, the pressure is familiar: graduates need credentials that remain meaningful in a fast-moving labor market, while universities must justify program decisions with evidence that stands up to internal scrutiny and external accreditation.

For Indoamérica, that challenge was sharpened by timing. The university was already engaged in an institutional effort to renew and create academic programs aligned with its strategic plan. Curriculum leaders—supported by the Vice-Rectorate and a dedicated curricular team—needed a way to move from informed intuition to measurable validation. Their questions were practical and high-stakes:

  • Are we designing programs around occupations with real and growing demand?
  • Do our graduate profiles reflect the skills employers are actually asking for?
  • How can we strengthen accreditation materials with credible, current evidence?

The team wasn’t looking for generic benchmarks. They needed analysis precise enough to shape program documents, support internal research, and defend decisions in quality assurance processes—without losing the human goal at the center: preparing students for real career outcomes.

The process

The work began with alignment—agreeing on scope, programs, and decision points. Indoamérica’s curriculum leaders and 1Mentor established the project team, mapped priorities, and defined the academic programs to be analyzed across undergraduate and graduate portfolios.

From there, the process followed a consistent rhythm:

  1. Intake and focus-setting: Indoamérica provided inputs such as occupational priorities and context for each program’s intended graduate outcomes.
  1. Data mining and analysis: 1Mentor refined the underlying data dictionaries and extracted updated labor-market insights responsive to Indoamérica’s feedback.
  1. Report development and delivery: Reports were produced and delivered in a sequence that allowed the university team to apply early findings while later programs were still in progress.
  1. Thematic synthesis for action: Each report centered on the same practical anchors—occupations, demand, skills, and knowledge areas—making it easier to compare programs and spot cross-cutting opportunities.

In total, 20 tailored reports were delivered, spanning programs such as Business Administration, Architecture, Industrial Design, Clinical Psychology, Information Technologies, and a set of master’s programs including Artificial Intelligence, Project Management, UX, and Environmental Management with a sustainability focus. The shared structure made the analysis usable not only for individual program teams, but also for institutional planning conversations that cut across faculties.

Results and impact

Universidad Indoamérica saw early outcomes in three connected areas: validation, transformation, and institutional proof.

The labor-market evidence helped confirm internal hypotheses—particularly around emerging global challenges like sustainability and digital transformation. That validation mattered because it reduced friction: decisions felt less like “opinions competing” and more like “evidence clarifying choices.”

The reports prompted a broader institutional conversation about transversal competencies—capabilities students need regardless of major. Insights from the work were incorporated into documentation tied to national accreditation processes (CASES), reinforcing a story of continuous improvement grounded in evidence.

  1. A foundation for cross-disciplinary innovation—especially around AI

Several of the programs analyzed became reference points for broader curriculum innovation, including proposals to integrate AI-related competencies across disciplines. The impact wasn’t limited to programs explicitly labeled “AI.” Instead, the work helped leaders ask a harder, more modern question: where should AI literacy and future-oriented skills live across the university, and what does that look like in learning outcomes?

As Luis David Prieto reflected on the project’s effect, he emphasized how the analysis went beyond incremental tweaks: “They helped us rethink, in some way, the educational model of Universidad Indoamérica.” He also pointed to the university-wide lens the work enabled: “This work allowed us to reflect on the competencies, knowledge, and skills needed—not only for the programs analyzed, but for the university overall.”

Lessons and Opportunities

  • Data is most powerful when it becomes a shared language. Indoamérica’s experience suggests that labor-market insights work best when they are structured consistently across programs, so curriculum leaders can compare, prioritize, and act.
  • Timing matters. Delivering the work in sync with accreditation and academic review cycles increased adoption—because the insights arrived when teams were already making decisions.
  • The next frontier is longitudinal measurement. Indoamérica has an opportunity to track medium- and long-term effects: how revised outcomes, skills coverage, and program positioning shape graduate employability, enrollment demand, and institutional differentiation over time.
  • Scaling transversal skills requires governance. As Indoamérica expands AI and future-skills integration across disciplines, the challenge will shift from “what should we include?” to “how do we ensure it is taught, assessed, and improved consistently?”

Indoamérica’s experience hints at something more human: when institutions ground academic choices in labor-market evidence, they create space for better questions about students’ futures.
