Dr. Gerardo Fernández-López is the Academic Vice-Rector and Member of the Board of Directors at Universidad Monteávila (Venezuela), where he also presides over the Council for Scientific, Humanistic, and Technological Development—directing strategic research, internationalization, and academic expansion. A distinguished Full Professor of Electronics and Circuits at Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB), Dr. Fernández-López holds a PhD in Information Technologies specializing in Robotics Control from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid, an MSc in Electrical Engineering from the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), and a BS in Electronic Engineering from USB.
Throughout a distinguished career bridging academic administration, scientific research, and technological innovation, Dr. Fernández-López has held pivotal leadership positions across higher education and professional bodies. He previously served as President of the USB Science Park (Parque Tecnológico USB), President of FUNINDES USB, Chair of the IEEE Venezuela Section, and President of the Venezuelan Association of Robotics and Home Automation. He is the founder of the Mechatronics R&D Group at USB and serves on the Technology and Innovation Commission of the Academy of Engineering and Habitat of Venezuela, alongside active memberships in the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society.
An internationally recognized scholar with over 80 peer-reviewed publications, his research contributions encompass advanced robot control, flexible robotics, swarm navigation, smart prosthetics, and artificial immune robotics. Translating research into economic and social impact, Dr. Fernández-López is also a serial deep-tech entrepreneur, having co-founded high-technology spin-offs including EINPHOS, LOGINTEL, and Biomekatrónica.
