Ethiopia Tilahun Abebe is the Head of IIE Ethiopia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where she provides strategic leadership for the region and oversees a diverse and complex portfolio of programs advancing girls’ education, women’s empowerment, leadership development, and higher education services. Her work includes scholarship and fellowship management, with a strong focus on ensuring effective student and scholar mobility across countries, institutions, and academic systems, supporting access, quality, and equity in international education.
With more than two decades of experience working with young people and communities, and over fifteen years as a trainer and facilitator in leadership, mentorship, and life-skills development, Ethiopia has built a distinguished career dedicated to expanding opportunities and promoting social inclusion. Her professional journey reflects a deep commitment to empowering women, girls, and youth as agents of change and to strengthening human capital development across Ethiopia and the broader African continent.
At IIE, she provides both strategic and operational leadership, working closely with national, regional, and global partners to design, manage, and scale programs that respond to local and regional priorities. She plays a key role in overseeing scholarship and fellowship initiatives, supporting scholars throughout their academic journeys, and ensuring effective coordination with universities, donors, and implementing partners. Her leadership contributes to strengthening higher education systems while enabling talented students and professionals to access transformative learning opportunities.
Prior to joining IIE, Ethiopia served as a Branch Manager at Save Your Generation Ethiopia, a youth-focused organization dedicated to developing principled and socially responsible young leaders. In this role, she led youth leadership initiatives and trained hundreds of professionals and emerging leaders through partnerships with organizations such as UNDP, CAFS, YMCA, and other national and regional programs. Her work emphasized leadership, civic engagement, and community development, leaving a lasting impact on participants and partner institutions.
A committed advocate for inclusive and sustainable development, Ethiopia strongly believes that unlocking the potential of women and young people is essential for national and regional transformation. She continues to champion their meaningful participation in social, economic, and civic life through policy engagement, program leadership, mentorship, and public speaking.
Ethiopia holds a BA in Management, an Advanced Diploma in Accounting, and is a prospective graduate of an MA in Sociology, reflecting her strong interdisciplinary foundation and ongoing commitment to learning and professional growth.
