Hiram Ponce graduated as a Mechatronics Engineer from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico, in 2008. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Engineering, specialising in Intelligent Control, in 2010, followed by a PhD in Computer Science, specialising in Artificial Intelligence, in 2013.
His professional experience includes working as an external trainer for Continental AG Mexico in testing and quality, as well as serving as an external consultant on logistics and optimisation projects for Mexico’s national oil company, PEMEX, in 2018.
Since 2014, he has been a full professor and researcher at Universidad Panamericana. His academic and research career includes the proposal and development of a new artificial intelligence technique known as Artificial Organic Networks. He has published more than 170 articles in scientific journals and international conference proceedings, contributed to more than 10 book chapters, and authored five books on artificial intelligence and robotics.
He has also served as a guest editor for specialist journals and is currently an Associate Editor of four international journals in the field of artificial intelligence, including IEEE Access.
From 2019 to 2025, he was the founding director of the Laboratory of Intelligence and Computer Vision (INVICO) at Universidad Panamericana. In 2020, he was recognised as a Senior Researcher D, the highest research classification awarded by the university.
Between 2021 and 2025, he served as Director of the PhD in Artificial Intelligence. From 2022 to 2025, he was also Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Engineering at Universidad Panamericana.
His awards include first place in the Life Sciences category of the Graphical Systems Achievement Design Award, presented by National Instruments in 2009. In 2014, he received the Mexico City Youth Award in recognition of his academic, research and professional contributions to science and technology. That same year, he won first place in the Best PhD Theses in Artificial Intelligence Award, presented by the Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence. In 2017, he received the Google Research Award for his contributions to artificial intelligence and robotics.
Since 2025, he has served as the founding director of CINOV, the Center for Innovation and Technological Development at Universidad Panamericana. He is also President of the Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence for the 2026–2028 term.
Hiram Ponce is a member of several national and international associations, including the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the Mexican Academy of Engineering, the Mexican Academy of Computing and the International Neural Network Society. He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a Level II National Researcher within Mexico’s National System of Researchers.
