Prof. Nelson Boniface, a Tanzanian, is the Deputy Vice Chancellor - Research at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania’s oldest and largest public university. He provides strategic leadership for research, innovation, knowledge exchange, postgraduate development, external partnerships, and resource mobilization, while overseeing the University’s research ecosystem and institutional initiatives that strengthen academic excellence and societal impact.
A Professor of Geological Sciences, Prof. Boniface has over two decades of experience in higher education, research management, and university leadership. Prior to his current appointment, he served in several senior academic leadership positions, including Director of Undergraduate Studies, Head of the Department of Geology, and Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor - Academic. His scholarly work focuses on Earth resources, mineral systems, geochronology, and the geological evolution of Africa, with extensive experience in international research collaborations and postgraduate supervision.
As Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Boniface has championed initiatives aimed at strengthening institutional capacity through research infrastructure development, innovation commercialization, digital transformation, external funding mobilization, and strategic partnerships with industry, government, and international organizations. He has played a leading role in advancing university-industry collaboration, enhancing research governance systems, and positioning UDSM as a regional hub for research, innovation, and knowledge production.
His experience in aligning leadership, infrastructure investment, and sustainable funding mechanisms provides valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges facing higher education institutions in Africa as they seek to expand access, improve quality, and build resilient systems capable of supporting long-term growth and development.
