Toshi Nakamura co-founded Kopernik with Ewa Wojkowska in 2010. Based in Indonesia, Kopernik conducts R&D, experimentation, and social venture creation to tackle social and environmental challenges.

Before Kopernik, Toshi worked at UNDP, with postings in Timor-Leste, Sierra Leone, Indonesia, New York, and Geneva, covering governance reform, peacebuilding, and post-disaster recovery — including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami response. Prior to the UN, he worked at McKinsey & Company in Tokyo.

He holds an LLB from Kyoto University and an MSc in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics. A World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2012), he served on the WEF Global Agenda Council on Sustainable Development (2014–2016) and advised the Carnegie Council's AI Ethics Initiative (2023–2024). He is a Guest Professor at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), Osaka University, and co-author of "How spin-offs in the social sector can unlock impact from within" (World Economic Forum, 2025).
