Professor Wai is the President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). He is committed to pioneering innovation and technology and translational research as well as making contributions to the development of Hong Kong, the Nation and the world.

Professor Wai received a bachelor’s degree, majoring in Physics, from The University of Hong Kong in 1981, followed by a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in Physics from the University of Maryland, College Park in the US in 1985 and 1988 respectively. With academic interests in the field of optical fibre communications, Professor Wai has a rich array of impactful and patented research achievements to his name. He has been elected as a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and a Honorary Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES). With the approval of the State Ministry of Science and Technology, he is also listed as one of the experts in the National Science and Technology Programme Expert Database.
