“A truly global university does not force one way of thinking. It mixes high academic standards with the local culture of every community it serves.”

The world is changing fast, and universities must change with it. In the past, universities stayed in one place, serving a single city or country. Today, the world needs education that crosses borders. But growing globally brings new challenges.

When universities open in new countries and just copy their usual way of doing things, they often fail. They can feel like strangers in the new place. They may not understand local needs, local ways of learning, or local values. This is why global universities need to think carefully about how they grow.

To help, our research looked at how some universities manage to grow globally while still feeling like they belong to each local community they join. We found 12 key things these universities do well.

These universities see themselves as guests in each place they enter, not owners. They respect local traditions and history. They adapt to local needs instead of expecting local people to change for them. They hire local people for important leadership jobs, not just entry-level positions. They teach in ways that make sense locally, while still holding high international standards. They partner with local businesses, governments, and communities, not just other universities. They create services that match local student needs, like mental health support that fits local culture. They make sure costs and scholarships are fair for local students. They celebrate local events and culture on campus. They track success with goals that match local needs, not just global rankings. They let local campus leaders make real decisions instead of always waiting for the main campus far away. And they always keep learning from each local experience to improve everything they do.

When universities do these 12 things, they stop being seen as foreign imports. They become valued parts of each community. They create campuses where local students feel at home and where international students feel they are getting a genuine local experience, not just a copy of education from another country.

The future of higher education belongs to universities that can be truly both global and local at the same time. These universities know that being global means being good at understanding and responding to what is local. Being local means being connected to something much bigger than any one place. Together, these ideas create universities that the whole world needs right now.

We work directly with local businesses, government leaders, and students. We ask them what skills they need to improve their own economy and society. We don't just tell a community what they need; we find the answers together.

Building this kind of local education takes time and real teamwork. For example, we are planning to open a new branch in London in late 2029, with our first students starting in 2030. We are not just finding a building. We are spending these next few years building strong relationships with the local community. This way, when the doors finally open, the university will already be a trusted part of the city.

Good global education means treating our partners everywhere as equals. By changing our academic programs to fit each country we operate in, we build a network of fresh, local ideas.

An international campus should be more than just classrooms. It should be a place built on trust and shared goals. In an uncertain world, creating education that truly belongs to its local community is a story worth telling — until it becomes the new normal.
