The headlines of QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026

Sweden’s Lund University is now ranked first in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, overtaking the University of Toronto, who held the top spot for two years. Lund University achieves top spot in two categories: Environmental Impact, and Governance.

The University of Toronto is now second, followed by University College London, who has improved from fifth to third.

The top 10 has seen some dramatic shifts this year. Alongside changes in the top three:

• London School of Economics and Political Studies has risen from =39 to sixth.

• The University of New South Wales has risen from =12 to equal-seventh.

• Canada’s McGill University has risen six places to ninth.

• Two institutions previously in the top 10 – ETH Zurich and University of California, Berkeley – are now joint 11^th.

With 240 institutions ranked, the United States is the most represented location, followed by China (163), the UK (109) and India (103). The UK, despite having fewer institutions represented, has 30 institutions in the top 100, nearly double the US (16).
