The QS World University Rankings Latin America 2020 are now live and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile has retained its top spot in the region.

This is followed by Brazil’s Universidade de São Paulo, which retained its second-place position, and Mexico’s Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) in third place.

The Universidad de Los Andes Colombia and Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) round out the top five in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) came in sixth place, while the Universidad de Chile came in seventh, both seeing drops from 2019.

The Universidad de Buenos Aires is the only Argentinian institution in the top 20, sitting in the eighth spot and retaining its position from last year.

This is followed by the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, both retaining their ninth and tenth places respectively.

Spotlight on Mexico

When looking specifically at Mexican institutions, there are some interesting insights to note.

As mentioned above, Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) now ranks third, rising three positions compared to last year’s rankings, while the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) fell two positions to sixth.

This is the second time that ITESM appears above UNAM in the Latin American rankings. The last time was in 2015, when UNAM ranked eighth and ITESM ranked seventh.

Comparatively, UNAM ranks 103rd in the QS World University Rankings 2020, while ITESM ranks 158thHowever, UNAM rose 10 positions, while ITESM rose a staggering 20 positions.

UNAM’s strength is its academic reputation, which accounts for 40% of the QS World University Rankings and 30% of the Latin American rankings.

ITESM has a good faculty to student ratio which indicates high teaching quality. While it produces less papers per faculty, it has better results for citations per paper, demonstrating the quality of the work.

Both rankings show an undeniable growth for ITESM over the last few years, suggesting there will be healthy competition within the Mexican market in the future.
