Dr Drew MacFarlane, QS Rankings Manager, points out that an estimated 380 million students will be studying at universities worldwide by 2030[1]. If the higher education sector were a country, it would be the third largest in the world. According to QS data, the world’s top 1000 universities alone have 23 million students. He also remarks that universities are interconnected hubs, extensively using land, energy, and other resources for their infrastructure. The higher education sector’s carbon footprint rivals that of a large country, due to both its direct supply chain and the extensive, often international, travel of its staff and students. Dr MacFarlane also highlights a governance challenge. Unlike nations, universities lack a global governing body, which affects the implementation of sustainable practices. He observes that the higher education sector, particularly in terms of adopting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) protocols, typically trails behind the corporate world. Dr MacFarlane says: “QS wants to support the higher education sector in its journey towards a more sustainable education for all and to encourage best practices in transparency, impactful research, equality, and climate mitigation. The QS Sustainability Ranking looks at performance across ESG categories, with a particular focus on the outward impact an institution is making, in the hope of sparking ideas, action, and engagement. It is a tool we offer to the sector to help drive positive initiative, and we are thankful to our higher education partners who have joined our efforts.”

QS’ methodology for the World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024 is based on university performance across three assessment categories:

  • Environmental Impact (Aggregating three indicators: Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Education and Environmental Research)
  • Social Impact (Aggregating five indicators: Equality, Knowledge Exchange, Impact of Education, Employability & Outcomes and Health & Wellbeing)
  • Governance (Considering factors related to good governance: ethics, hiring practices, transparency, decision making etc.)

Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, highlights the role of the QS Sustainability Rankings as a cutting-edge tool for gauging the progress and collaborative efforts of universities globally in tackling pressing existential challenges. Turner draws attention to the increasing importance of these considerations for students, noting that their choices in academic pursuits are guided not only by career prospects but also by their personal values and beliefs.

“For this generation of brand-conscious students, their chosen university represents a lifelong affiliation, deeply intertwined with personal identity, and social awareness”, she says.

“Our Sustainability Survey revealed a striking trend: 79% of prospective international students view an institution’s sustainability practices as extremely or very important. Additionally, 82% actively seek information on these practices while researching universities. This demonstrates a clear shift in priorities among today’s students who are increasingly weighing the social and environmental impact of their future alma mater alongside academic excellence.”

Turner emphasises QS’ dedication to addressing feedback from the millions of students they serve. “As students become more discerning and value-driven in their educational choices, it’s imperative that the resources guiding them align with their values, especially concerning sustainability and social responsibility. In essence, the university they choose is not just an institution—it becomes a reflection of their commitment to making a positive impact in the world.”

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024 – Overview

    • South Africa dominates the table among African countries. The University of Cape Town (50th), stands as Africa’s premier university and the only one on the continent to secure a spot in the top 50. This distinction is primarily due to its outstanding performance in Environmental Sustainability, where it ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. This indicator assesses an institution’s commitment to, and implementation of, its sustainability and climate strategies. The University of Cape Town achieves Africa’s highest score in six out of nine evaluated indicators.
    • Australia is among the top performers overall in this year’s rankings, boasting the second most top 10 universities alongside the UK, with two, and behind Canada, with three. Among locations with 10 or more ranked universities, Australia achieves the world’s highest average score for QS’ Social Impact category, thanks to world-leading scores in Equality, related to diversity and inclusivity, and Health & Wellbeing, which assesses relevant research output and quality of life for students and staff. Meanwhile, all three of the world’s top-scoring universities for Impact of Education are Australian, suggesting excellent academic performance in subjects related to positive social impact.
    • Four Asian universities are among the world’s top 50. The University of Tokyo is the region’s highest-ranked institution, placing 22nd. It is followed by the National University of Singapore (26th), Seoul National University (46th) and Nanyang Technological University (50th). The National University of Singapore (NUS) is named the world’s best for Environmental Research and Asia’s best for QS’ Impact of Education indicator, in which it ranks 15th globally, suggesting outstanding academic prowess in subjects with the potential to generate social impact, such as Politics, Law or Education.
    • Canada is the world’s most sustainable higher education system by some measures. The University of Toronto is the world’s highest-ranked university overall, while the University of British Colombia comes fourth. Canada is home to more universities in the world’s top five and top 10 than any other country or territory. Its universities offer exceptional Environmental Education, with more top 10 universities for this indicator than any other location, highlighting its academic prowess in environmental and climate-related subjects. Like its closest competitors, the UK and Australia, Canada performs excellently for Equality, with the University of British Columbia taking the world’s highest rank for this indicator.
    • No Chinese university places among the world’s top 100 most sustainable universities. Fudan University is the national leader, placing 142nd. Chinese universities achieve their strongest performances in Knowledge Exchange – based on collaboration, research sharing and community engagement – and Employability & Outcomes – related to career prospects and graduate opportunities. In both metrics, two Chinese institutions are among the top 50. Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University place 40th and 50th respectively for Knowledge Exchange. Zhejiang University and Fudan University are the national leaders for Employability & Outcomes, placing 47th and 49th respectively.
    • In Continental Europe, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands is the highest-ranked university, coming 14th. Its Environmental Impact is exceptional, placing 11th globally in this category thanks to high-quality Environmental Research. Meanwhile, ETH Zurich comes 18th overall, with its success underpinned by outstanding Knowledge Exchange, placing second globally in this metric.
    • Sweden boasts some of the world’s foremost universities in this year’s rankings. Lund University in particular is a world leader in Equality, Knowledge Exchange and Environmental Research, ranking second globally in each of these metrics. However, it is in QS’ Governance category that Lund University truly shines. It is the joint best university in the world for this indicator, alongside Lancaster University and the University of York in the UK.
    • The United Kingdom performs excellently in the rankings. The University of Manchester and Imperial College London both place in the world’s top 10, each enjoying world-class Knowledge Exchange and Health & Wellbeing. In QS’ Good Governance metric, the UK performs exceptionally, boasting nine of the world’s 10 best-governed universities, according to this indicator. Similarly, more UK universities place in the top 10 for Knowledge Exchange than any other country or territory.
    • The United States enjoys the world’s best Employability & Outcomes, underpinned by its truly exceptional universities. In this indicator, five US institutions are among the world’s top 10 including three of the world’s best. This includes the world’s top-performing university for this indicator, Stanford University. Stanford is followed closely by the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Columbia University, both tied in second globally. The University of California, Berkeley (UCB) is the second highest-ranked university overall. Its success is driven by its outstanding Environmental Education and Environmental Sustainability, in which it is among the three best universities in the world.

New QS University Rating System Rewards Sustainability

London, 14th November 2023: QS Quacquarelli Symonds is foregrounding sustainability in the largest-ever methodological innovation to its QS Stars university rating system.

QS Stars, which rates institutions out of a possible five stars based on areas that are most important to students, is introducing Sustainability as an assessment category from January 2024. Accounting for more than 20% of a university’s total score, the category includes three fields essential to institutional sustainability, including Good Governance, Social or Environmental Impact and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

QS designed the transformation to reflect universities’ pivotal role in tackling contemporary global challenges while emphasising the increasing importance of sustainability to prospective students.

QS’ 2022 Sustainability Survey found that 79% of prospective international students consider an institution’s sustainability practices extremely or very important, with 82% saying they would actively seek information on these practices when researching a university.

Leigh Kamolins, Director of Analytics & Evaluation at QS, said: “Addressing environmental sustainability concerns and driving social impact are no longer ‘third missions’ for higher education institutions. They are core to what the sector sets out to achieve, solving the biggest challenges facing the planet and ensuring our society, global and local, is equipped with the best minds to make the world a better place.”

He continued: “The introduction of Sustainability and the refinement of other analytical lenses, such as Employability and Entrepreneurship, represents the largest methodological innovation in QS Stars since its inception, facilitating an ever more comprehensive analysis of the higher education environment in this contemporary context.”

QS Stars is an opt-in university rating system created in 2009. The new methodology, which will launch in January, assesses universities based on a minimum of nine categories, including seven mandatory categories and two electives.

  • Germany’s premier institutions produce an exceptional amount of research. The country is home to more universities in the regional top 50 and top 10 for Papers per Faculty than any other country. In fact, two of Europe’s three most productive research institutions are German, with Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg and Technische Universität Ilmenau placing second and third in this metric. Only the Georgian Technical University produces more research.
  • Italy is also highly productive, enjoying Europe’s third-highest average score per institution for Papers per Faculty, behind Switzerland and Portugal. Interestingly, Italy has more top 100 institutions in this indicator than any other country, with 25, more than double the next highest, France and Germany, with 13 each. Meanwhile, Italy also shines for Outbound Student Mobility, with more top 50 universities in this indicator than any other country.
  • The Netherlands commands the region’s greatest overall renown among international employers and academics alike. In both QS’ Employer and Academic Reputation indicators, it enjoys the highest average score per institution, among countries with 10 or more ranked universities. This is reflected by its high proportion of top 100 universities in these metrics, with 47% of its institutions placing in the top 100 for Academic Reputation and 41% for Academic Reputation, more than any other country.
  • Switzerland performs exceptionally in research, both in terms of impact and volume. It boasts the highest average score in both Citations per Paper and Papers per Faculty. Similarly, Switzerland shines for internationalisation, boasting one of Europe’s most diverse student and faculty cohorts. This is particularly pronounced for International Faculty Ratio in which six of the region’s top 10 universities are Swiss, including three in the top 5.
  • However, it is Spain that boasts some of the most mobile student cohorts. It is home to three of Europe’s top five universities for Outbound Student Exchange and two for Inbound Student Exchange, more than any other country. Meanwhile, IE University is home to the most international student body in the region.
  • Despite its large number of ranked universities, no Turkish university is among the region’s top 100. Middle East Technical University takes the country’s highest rank, placing 124th thanks to a strong Employer Reputation and Outbound Exchange.

QS and the University of Exeter spearhead global Future17 Sustainability Challenge

QS and The University of Exeter unite students from leading universities for international experiential learning in sustainability

London, 19 September: Four world-leading universities have joined the groundbreaking Future17 SDG Challenge, bringing together companies, start-ups and charities, leading universities, and international teams of students for real-life projects focused on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Spearheaded by QS Quacquarelli Symonds and the University of Exeter, the initiative launches its fifth cohort this September, uniting more than 300 students from nine universities across six continents to develop SDG literacy and build career skills.

This term, Future17 has added the American University of Sharjah and Mexico’s Tec de Monterrey to the consortium of universities partaking in the programme.

QS President and Chair Nunzio Quacquarelli said: “QS is thrilled to be a co-founder of the Future17 SDG Challenge Program. It offers students a unique experiential learning opportunity without borders, bringing together students and organizations from around the globe under one common goal, fostering sustainability, collaboration and innovation for a better future.”

He added: “By delivering real-world projects, students develop cultural competencies, digital skills, collaborative workflows, critical problem-solving and work experience to enhance their personal growth and future employment prospects.”

Projects range from climate change adaptation in business for CapGemini, recycling tea waste into fabric dyes for T-Hues in Sri Lanka, sustainable cannabis growing in Canada with Ethical Growth Consulting and sustainable finance for German tech company Briink.

Ben Howard-Cooper, head of sustainable finance at Briink, said: “By leveraging student support we were able to push through projects that would’ve otherwise taken us months if not a year to complete so that was a huge help.”

Cooper continued: “In this world, we care a lot about collaboration and we know that the next generation is going to be integral in taking these frameworks and moving them to the next level.”

He added: “So making sure that we are working with the current student communities to upskill and train them around sustainability was something that meant a lot to our organisation. So that they can take the baton and run with it as they enter the workplace over the next couple of years.”

The programme reflects the increasing importance of sustainability to prospective students. QS’ 2023 Sustainability Survey found that 79% of prospective international students consider an institution’s sustainability practices extremely or very important, with 82% saying they would actively seek information on these practices.

One survey respondent said: “As a student, I seek out the research and programmes a university has, the overall progress of their involvement in sustainability, what steps they take to implement sustainable methods and whether they have a course on sustainability.”

    • The highest newly-ranked university is Kazakhstan’s Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in 44th. However, five new entrants rank among the region’s top-100: Sharif University of Technology (Iran, 84th), University of Tehran (Iran, 92nd), L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan, 96th) and Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (South Korea, 98th).

    • Two Chinese universities are among Asia’s top-3, marking China’s best-ever performance in QS’ Asia Rankings and reflecting not only the ascension of Chinese universities but also the faltering of its regional competitors.

    • Two Singaporean universities are among the region’s top-5, with Nanyang University placing 5th, down from 3rd last year. This is the first time in eight years that a Singaporean university has not topped the table or that two of the top-3 positions have not been occupied by Singaporean institutions.

    • Of locations with more than ten ranked institutions, South Korea enjoys the highest concentration of top-20 universities, with 6% in this band. Its premier university, KAIST, breaks into the regional top-10, climbing six positions to place 8th – its best result in five years.  This improvement is underpinned by improvements in five of QS’ metrics, most significantly in international research.

    • Japan is home to Asia’s most renowned universities among Academics and Employers alike, with The University of Tokyo achieving the region’s highest score in both these metrics. Kyoto University, meanwhile, achieves the region’s second-highest score for Employer Reputation and fifth-highest for Academic Reputation. Only China has as many universities in the top-5 for QS’ reputational indicators.

    • Pakistan’s Aga Khan University enjoys Asia’s highest teaching capacity according to Faculty/Student Ratio. However, the National University of Sciences and Technology (Islamabad) is Pakistan’s highest-ranked university in 67th regionally.

    • With three universities among Asia’s top-5 for their number of Staff with a PhD, Iran boasts some of the region’s most highly trained faculty. Its top-ranked university, Sharif University of Technology (84th), boasts Asia’s second-highest number of Staff with a PhD.

    • India is Asia’s most prolific producer of research according to Papers per Faculty. Three of its universities are among the region’s top-5 for this metric, including the Indian Institute of Science which produces the region’s second-highest amount of research, behind China’s University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

    • The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences’ pre-eminence for research output is underpinned by an exceptional level of cross-border collaborative research, scoring a perfect 100/100 for International Research Network.

    • Singapore and Hong Kong SAR both produce an outstanding level of important research, according to QS’ measure of scholarly impact, Citations per Paper, with two institutions each placing among the region’s top-5. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is the highest-ranked university in this metric, indicating outstanding quality research.

    • Somewhat unsurprisingly, the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau are home to Asia’s most international faculty. Macau University of Science and Technology boasts the highest score for International Faculty Ratio.

    • A similar trend is seen for International Student Ratio, with Macau University of Science and Technology again taking the top spot. However, in this indicator, Malaysia also asserts itself as a regional leader, boasting two universities in the top-5 and four in the top-10 – more than any other location.

    • Vietnam is the most improved Asian location, with 55% of its institutions moving up the rankings, followed by Malaysia with 34% and Indonesia with 28%.

    • Of Asian locations with more than ten ranked universities, Malaysia has the highest concentration of top-class universities, with 22% of its institutions among Asia’s top-100 and 17% among the top-50.

QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter said: “Asia is home to a flourishing higher education ecosystem that is renowned the world over, and its territories continue to assert themselves and their universities on the global stage through robust research infrastructure and diverse, highly trained faculty.”

Sowter continued: “This year’s rankings is the most competitive yet, spotlighting more Asian universities than ever before, meaning not only that competition becomes ever more fierce, but also that its students, faculty, and policymakers are increasingly able to benchmark and enhance the quality, integrity and sustainability of their institutions.”

QS International Trade Rankings 2023

Global trade has been a driver of development and prosperity for decades. Yet, the trade sector is experiencing unprecedented challenges. If trade is to continue to provide economic and societal benefits for all, it must attract talented people who are equipped to deal with complexity, and drive policy and business decision-making.

The Rankings are the only specialized ranking of graduate trade programmes globally.

Through the Rankings, the Hinrich Foundation supports students to identify programs that will secure them employment and accelerate their trade careers, enables companies to hire work-ready talent, and provides universities with comparability, recognition and the means to enhance their global trade programs.

To ensure the relevancy of the ranking criteria, the Foundation drew on its rich expertise in trade, and elicited input from a panel of trade professionals and graduate-level professors of practice.

Among key recommendations are that a quality trade curriculum includes courses on cross-border trade, policy, logistics, international trade finance and cross-cultural leadership. Jessica Turner, CEO at QS, said: “The development of Covid-19 vaccines is just one recent illustration of the impact achieved by universities cooperating to solve a world crisis. Universities are uniquely placed to lead global efforts in enacting environmental and social change, whether through research, teaching, or community engagement. QS aims to provide prospective students with independent insights on universities’ record in improving sustainability.

“We also seek to support universities in monitoring and benchmarking their progress as they strive to implement their ESG4 strategies and find solutions to unprecedented global challenges.”

The overall rank of the universities featured in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability is determined by the sum of their scores in two categories:

    • Environmental Impact (aggregating three indicators: Sustainable Institutions, Sustainable Education and Sustainable Research)

    • Social Impact (aggregating five indicators: Equality, Knowledge Exchange, Impact of Education, Employability and Opportunities, and Quality of Life).

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability: Regional Overview

    • South Africa dominates the table among African countries. Its premier institution, the University of Cape Town, achieves’ Africa’s highest scores in 4/8 of QS’ metrics.

    • The Arab Region’s highest-ranked university is the University of Beirut. It is among the world’s top-20 in QS’ Sustainable Education metric, which assesses the extent to which institutions are educating students to both understand and make a difference to the environment.

    • The only Asian institution to place among the world’s top-20 is The University of Tokyo, which records world-class results for Sustainable Education and Sustainable Institutions. The latter indicator analyses institutional strategy and operations directed towards an environmentally sustainable future.

    • The Nordic countries assert themselves as world-leaders in this ranking, with Continental Europe’s top three positions occupied by Nordic universities. This success is underpinned by some of the world’s finest Sustainability Research. Sweden enjoys the world’s highest concentration of top-class universities among locations with five or more institutions.

The UN’s most recent Sustainable Development Report showed that the world’s progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has slowed for the second consecutive year. 7 However, the global higher education sector can play a meaningful role in reversing this post-pandemic slowdown.

Dr Andrew MacFarlane, QS Ranking Manager, said: “This ranking looks for signs that the university is both committed to, and is already making a difference, to the society it exists within and depends on. By highlighting the impact of their alumni, the alignment of their research to the UN’s SDGs, or their policies and governance, we hope this ranking will serve to further intensify the efforts of universities to help meet the global challenges we all face.”

The detailed methodology of the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability is available here.

    • Its high levels of openness to international students, which see it achieve the world’s fifth-best score (94.9/100) for Student Mix.

Ben Sowter, QS Senior VP, said: “Responses to our surveys from students that have studied in London make it clear that it offers outstanding cultural, economic, and educational opportunities. With two of the world’s ten best universities situated in the city, it remains a world-leading educational hub. Worryingly, cities are broadly becoming less affordable for students by QS’ measures, with just under 90% declining in our Affordability metric.”

Methodology

The six metric groups that QS use to compile the Best Student Cities ranking are:

    • Rankings: does this city have a range of highly ranked universities?

    • Desirability: is this city a desirable place to live, and do prospective students consistently express a preference for studying here?

    • Affordability: is this city affordable for students? This indicator group accounts for a range of cost-of-living metrics, including average tuition fees, the iPad Index, and the Big Mac Index.

    • Employer Activity: do employers regard the city’s universities highly, and are there economic opportunities for graduates? This indicator group makes use of over 99,000 responses to the QS Employer Survey, while also factoring in the levels of youth employment in a city.

    • Student Mix: is this city a diverse and tolerant place in which to live? Does it have a large student population?

    • Student Voice: do students who have actually studied in this city recommend it to their peers? This indicator group acknowledges the importance of independent peer review in the provision of high-quality recommendations. This edition is informed by the views of 98,426 survey respondents.
